China is one of the world’s major natural gas producers, with abundant natural gas resources. However, it lacks large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) system engineering practices. The development of natural gas liquefaction technology has made it possible to deliver natural gas from western China to the eastern and southern coastal areas at low cost, thereby alleviating the imbalance in the distribution of China’s natural gas resources. Currently, China has conducted limited research on natural gas liquefaction technology, lacks a grasp of core LNG technologies, and lacks national standards for large-scale LNG storage tanks, leaving a significant gap compared to developed countries. China currently has no independently designed and manufactured large-scale atmospheric pressure LNG storage tanks, and few have been independently constructed using imported technology. With the development of the LNG industry, China is increasingly focusing on research into LNG storage tanks.

The development of LNG storage tanks shows that larger tanks are an inevitable trend, offering the following advantages: larger tanks reduce steel consumption and capital costs, and are compact in design and occupy less floor space. Given the same total volume, several large units take up much less space than a cluster of smaller units. They are also easier to operate and manage, and are more convenient to inspect, repair, and maintain than a single small unit.

These advantages are driving the trend toward larger tank sizes. Large, atmospheric-pressure LNG storage tanks will become the future of LNG storage. The scale of LNG storage tanks should be moderate, meaning they must be economically scaled. This facilitates unified management of LNG, thereby ensuring safer and more efficient use. Atmospheric-pressure LNG storage tanks can save significant manpower and material resources during construction and reduce risks associated with LNG use.

Thus, comprehensively considering all factors and further strengthening research on cryogenic LNG storage tanks is of vital practical significance for advancing the development of the LNG industry and addressing the increasingly severe environmental challenges and energy crises. Large, atmospheric-pressure storage tanks are the inevitable trend.
